ABOUT EMSB
Severe burn injuries are devastating to both the injured individual and the healthcare professionals faced with the initial management of the severely burned patient. Generally the patient is in significant physical distress; the family members are emotionally distressed; and the healthcare professional is apprehensive because they feel inadequately trained and experienced to deal with severe burn injuries. Added to this is the pressure of the need to optimise the patient within a specific timeframe – just as the “Golden Hour” applies to trauma patients, burns patients should be assessed; managed; and if necessary transferred within 24 hours following the burn injury.
The Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) course teaches a structured and stepwise approach to the initial management of the severely burned patient. It is evidence-based and uses various teaching modalities to emphasise fundamental principles and management protocols. In addition, the course consistently highlights the benefits of a consistent approach to emergency burn care across all levels of healthcare providers: optimisation of initial care; facilitation of appropriate referral; and, most importantly, positively impacting the survival and outcome of the patient with severe burns.
EMSB is one of the few burns education courses that is internationally recognised, and was developed by the Australia & New Zealand Burn Association. It is currently taught in multiple countries including Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway. The SA Burn Society holds an exclusive license from ANZBA to delivering the EMSB course in South Africa, and from 2012 has run multiple courses across the country.
Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) course (1-day)
The EMSB course teaches how to recognise, assess, stabilise and transfer the severely burned patient. Relevant clinical skills are demonstrated, and important topics are explained in more detail in group discussions. Life-like case simulations are then used to consolidate and integrate the course material. The course is aimed at health professionals who may find themselves caring for person with an acute severe burn injury. It supplements existing clinical knowledge in trauma management with the specific aspects and challenges associated with a burn injury.
The course concludes with a written examination (MCQ) and a short, simulated patient clinical scenario. A certificate of completion is provided on successful completion of both parts.
The course runs over one day, commencing with registration at 07h00 and concluding between 17h00 and 18h00, depending on number of participants. Numbers are limited to a maximum of 24 participants for each course.
Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB) Nurses Education course (2-day)
The 2-day course covers similar topics and skills to the 1-day course, but with more focus on small group discussions and interaction. There are no formal examinations at the end of the course, and a certificate of attendance is issued to all participants. The course is recommended for nursing staff and healthcare professions allied to medicine (PAMs) who are involved in caring for burn survivors and would like to improve their knowledge and understanding of the initial management of a burn-injured person.
